So far I'm really enjoying this camera. I've had it for two days now so I'm giving my first impressions. As time goes by, I'll flesh out my review. And this point of view is from someone who has only used point and shoot cameras, by the way. :)
Why I bought it - I wanted a more powerful point and shoot camera. I'm still very much a novice photographer but I do like having quality shots, especially for such events as weddings, graduations, bdays, and everyday outings. Originally I wanted the S95 but saw that the new PS ELPH 300 HS had comparable specs and was powerful but still had a simple design. $250 is the most I've paid for a camera but also cheaper than the S95. Nonetheless, I saw this purchase a long term investment of sorts!
Design layout - the black model looks sleek, is thin and very pocketable. It doesn't weigh down my purse at all. It has a rougher material design rather than the smooth metal surface I'm used to, which is a nice change. I feel like a get a better grip on the camera which is already so small. Overall, I like the design.
Button layout - Having owned two digital cameras in the past (Sony and Fujifilm) I didn't have a hard time figuring out what buttons do and the menu system. Low learning curve overall. And nothing reading through the manual can't help. :)
Image/video quality - I've been playing with the different effects (fisheye and miniature are cool), video shooting (1080p HD and you can zoom during filming), macro mode, different aspect ratios (square mode, 16:9), indoor, outdoor, flash, etc. Very happy/impressed with the quality. Shots turn out very clear and crisp and you can see a lot of detail in the photographs- even in macro mode, which has been terrible in my old cameras!
